The major network providers: AT&T, Verizon, Cox Communications, Comcast, etc. would like to begin charging different rates to major content providers: Google, Yahoo, etc. for priority access to the fast lanes of the Information Superhighway, as well as multi-tiered access to heavy end-users.
This could, in theory, lead to providers granting access to the fastest components of their networks to the content providers and end-users with the deepest pockets.
This could also potentially allow providers, at least indirectly, to control content, sites, platforms, equipment required, and modes of communication allowed.
This situation came about as a result of the major telecommunications companies reneging on their promises to build a nationwide fiberoptic network one hundred times faster than the copper wire network we have today. This after taking multi-millions of dollars in tax breaks and other financial incentives guaranteed them by the government, which saw the network as a benefit to the nation.
This makes a perverse kind of sense when one considers that they have already taken the money, they can still charge content providers (and anyone else who can afford to pay) premium rates for priority access to their networks, and they can avoid the heavy financial outlay that the new network infrastructure would require.
What concerns the vast majority of Internet users is what this level of control by a few elite groups and well off individuals would mean for the rest of us. We have heard time and again of a digital divide between the haves and the have-nots. This situation threatens to create an access divide within the haves themselves.
Since its inception the Internet has been seen as the next frontier. The internet is also the last frontier of unregulated openness. It is an invention of democratic societies intended for use by the world as a whole. The Internet has fostered innovations in political campaigninggg, debate and protest: (Tiananmen Square, the Iranian uprising, the war in Iraq), as well as the free exchange of ideas and viewpoints between groups and agencies as ideologically diverse as MoveOn.org, the Christian Coalition and Al Jazeera. And anybody can participate: Major news organizations, bloggers, podcasters, etc.
The Internet has also given rise to numerous innovations which include: Online shopping, banking, bill paying, gaming, education, and the sharing of our lives through social networks (MySpace, Facebook, Twitter). This, in addition to the impact the Internet has had on the music, motion picture, and television industries.
The Internet has been, and continues to be, a truly tranformative technology which has changed the way we live our lives. We need Net Neutrality legislation to preserve the economic, educational, social, and innovative benefits the Internet, unregulated and equally open to all will continue to provide.

Red Faction Armageddon

Like the first and third games of the series, the game takes place on the planet of Mars. The game takes place in the year 2170, half a century after the events of Red Faction: Guerrilla, since the end of the third game the surface of the planet has become uninhabitable. This occurred when the massive Terraformer on Mars which supplied it with its Earth-like air and weather had been destroyed, causing the atmosphere to turn to chaos with super-tornados and lightning storms engulfing the planet. In order to survive, the Colonists were forced to flee to the underground mines of Mars, building a network of habitable caves under the surface of the planet.
The game begins five years after the relocation underground and follows the story of Darius Mason, grandson of Martian Revolution heroes Alec Mason and Samanya who were the main characters of Red Faction: Guerrilla, who runs a lucrative series of businesses based in Bastion, the underground hub of Colonist activity, including mining, scavenging and mercenary-work. Only a few sane people venture to the now-ravaged surface of Mars, apart from contractors like Darius and smugglers who smuggle goods between settlements. Darius is tricked into reopening a mysterious shaft in an old Marauder temple which releases a long-dormant evil race of aliens causing an Armageddon on/in Mars. Colonist and Marauder settlements alike are torn apart by the new enemies with Darius and the Red Faction having to save the Martian population once again.

Red Faction Guerrilla

Alec Mason, the player character and a mining engineer, arrives on Mars Tharsis Region to reunite with brother Dan and begin a new life, and learns Dan is a member of the Red Faction. While on work detail, Dan testifies about the Earth Defense Force's cruelty to the Martian people and asks Alec to join their cause, he is soon after gunned down by air support from an EDF assault team. Alec is rescued from summary execution by Red Faction guerrillas and becomes a reluctant freedom fighter for the group alongside avid inventor "Sam" Samanya, rambling psychotic Jenkins, and commander Hugo Davies. Between Davies' command and Alec's skill and bravery, the EDF are quickly driven out of the sector known as Parker for the first time.
The campaign against the EDF continues in the Dust sector, and Alec is eventually assigned to routine surveillance of the Marauders, a mysterious and violent warrior tribe living in the inhospitable Badlands, in hopes of recovering stolen weapons. Alec tracks them to an abandoned Ultor Corporation base that promptly comes under massive assault from the EDF. During the fracas, Alec steals a strange device called the Nano Forge and escapes. This in turn brings attention to Admiral Kobel from a huge and powerful warship called the Hydra, along with General Roth, commander of the EDF forces on Mars, who declare Alec Mason a wanted man following this incident. General Roth turns his attention to Dust and the EDF responds by pulling out of the sector and ordering the artillery base in the Free Fire Zone to bomb Dust into oblivion. Alec is tasked with saving members of the Red Faction and intel on the EDF from the bombardment, which he succeeds in doing.
Alec temporarily loses faith in the movement, citing that no matter how determined their efforts are, the EDF will simply bomb them to submission. However, Sam analyzes the Nano Forge and discovers it can create catastrophic nanites that can disintegrate any object. She builds a prototype rifle from the device and entrusts it to Alec's care.
After determining a series of blind spots in its coverage a successful "suicide run" against an EDF artillery base is commenced, allowing the group to begin hostilities against the EDF in their own territories. Shortly thereafter the EDF stages an assault against the Red Faction, resulting in the annihilation of the Red Faction's Badlands Camp and the death of Davies. Only Sam, Alec and a handful of other fighters survive the assault, they learn afterward that the Hydra, the EDF's most powerful dreadnought spacecraft, is nearing Mars, with the Hydra's command intending to use its unparalleled firepower to put an end to the Red Faction and, if necessary, to all the life on the planet. Sam declares that they need support from the Marauders if their campaign is to continue, when Alec remains dubious, she reveals that she is a Marauder herself. The pair head to a Marauder stronghold to meet with their ruler, Vasha, Sam's sister. Sam requests the usage of the Marauders' particle accelerator technology, with plans to combine it with the Nano Forge, creating a weapon (essentially a gigantic Nano Rifle) capable of destroying the Hydra. Vasha agrees to let the Red Faction use their technology in exchange for possession of the Nano Forge once the war is finished.
After capturing a broadcasting station and using it to regroup the Red Faction, Sam and Alec lead the remaining Red Faction and Marauders to a successful final assault on EDF Central Command. The two groups converge on Mt. Vogel to begin utilizing the Marauder's accelerator, however, a surprise EDF blitzkrieg lead by General Roth wipes out the Marauders guarding the summit end of the accelerator and Vasha along with them. Alec storms the mountain with a modified missile-pod tank, defeating General Roth's army and killing Roth. Sam's plan succeeds and the accelerated Nano Forge is successful in vaporizing the Hydra, killing Admiral Kobel in the process. As the survivors of Mars celebrate, Sam declares the war over, but Alec knows that the EDF will come back. While Sam says that will be awhile, Alec responds with a confident "We'll be ready for 'em". Alec and Sam approach the crowds of civilians gathered, and Alec raises his hammer in the air, showing the sign of the Red Faction and their long-waited victory.

Red Faction II

In the year 2080, five years after the events of Red Faction, on Mars, the nanotechnology developed by Capek has been claimed by the Earth Defense Force (EDF). With this technology, the EDF commences a reorganization of the Ultor Corporation with a particular focus on enhanced supersoldiers and suitable weaponry. However, the research that was done by Capek in his laboratories has been consequently stolen by other militant groups and assorted terrorist organizations. This has gone on for years; the research has changed hands in the criminal underworld many times. The player is introduced to the role of an explosives expert (codenamed "Alias"), as he embarks on a special operations mission to claim the research data for the Republic of the Commonwealth.
Eventually, the research was successfully claimed by the elite forces of Victor Sopot, Chancellor of the dystopic military state known as The Commonwealth. Sopot uses the nanotechnology to enhance his already formidable military forces, and successfully creates the first supersoldiers with the research data. Fearing the potential of his new supersoldiers, he orders them all to be hunted down and executed at once and replaced with far less intelligent, mutated horrors known as "The Processed".
The handful that escaped Sopot's order have banded together to form "the Squad". The Squad consists of: Molov, team leader and tactician, Shrike, chief transportation expert, Repta, heavy weapons specialist, Quill, accomplished sniper. Tangier, covert specialist, Alias, explosives engineer.
Collectively betrayed by their leader, the Squad flees underground and ally themselves with the Red Faction as mercenaries. The Red Faction, at this point in the story, is a more organized resistance movement that is strongly opposed to the rule of Sopot and the skewed political tenets of The Commonwealth. The Squad eventually pursue Sopot and neutralize all opposition in their way as the Red Faction takes the conflict to the streets in a joint uprising against the rule of The Commonwealth. During the course of the initial stages of the game, the Red Faction and the Squad mutually support each other as they overcome shared objectives which include sabotaging propaganda installations. The uprising culminates in successfully trapping Sopot in his missile silo and executing him with the exhaust flames of an ICBM he had planned to fire in another political move to undermine or annihilate the Red Faction.
Alias returns to the makeshift base of operations, only to discover that all of the Red Faction resistance members present have been brutally slaughtered. Molov remarks that with Sopot dead, and with the nanotech research in Molov's possession, the Commonwealth's military forces have voluntarily pledged allegiance to Molov. He declares Alias and Tangier to be enemies of the state for supporting the Red Faction. Also present is the leader of the Red Faction forces on Earth, a young commander codenamed Echo, who explains to the Squad's members that the Red Faction had no intention of misusing the Squad's participation in the uprising. Echo tries to explain that the Red Faction's ultimate goal is to bring about peace. Molov, enraged, retorts that a declaration of peace would defeat the purpose of their existence as soldiers. As Molov is about to fire his weapon he is held hostage by a cloaked Tangier, who buys the three characters enough time to make an escape with their lives. The three split up, and agree to meet in a more discreet location to plan a way to stop Molov and his army of supersoldiers. The remaining members of the Squad give chase.
Shortly after fleeing to safety, Alias (now working alone) lends aid to surviving Red Faction members who are defending themselves from the enemy. While Tangier embarks on a solo mission to uncover more of Molov's plot, Alias and Echo meet up in a secret location to discuss an alternate strategy to stop Molov. At that moment, Echo is gunned down by Quill, with her specialized railgun. Alias tracks down the trajectory of the lethal gunfire to an abandoned cathedral, where Quill and her detachment of troops and Processed do battle with Alias. Alias successfully out-guns the sniper, and Quill tumbles through the rosette window to fall to her demise. Alias claims her weapon as a trophy.
Tangier radios Alias soon afterward, and the two agree to shut down Molov's commandeered nanotech laboratory, located within the colossal statue of Sopot. Upon arrival, the two split up. Repta makes his appearance, distracting Alias with gunfire and deploying Processed mutants, including Molov's newest creation: a more refined Processed mutant that is stronger and more resilient than the first Processed. Alias pursues Repta into the industrial processor, located within the base of Sopot's statue. The area is littered with a network of catwalks, where Repta lurks. Eventually, Alias triumphs and shoots Repta off one of the catwalks, sending Repta plummeting into the irradiated processing ground below. Alias claims Repta's abandoned weapon as he continues his climb up the base of Sopot's Statue and destroys the nanotech laboratory's power generators. Alias's explosives weaken the foundation, and renders the statue unstable.
Alias encounters Repta again. The nanotechnology within Repta has been further enhanced, destabilizing Repta while augmenting his capacity for combat; Repta has been processed into the ultimate killing machine, and summons Molov's nanotech elite as reinforcements. In addition, Repta is engulfed in an energy field that disrupts nearby nanotechnology, subjecting the player to reversed player controls at moments during the fight. As Alias triumphs once again, the energy field within Repta reaches critical mass and Repta explodes.
Alias and Tangier meet up and pursue Molov, who is scaling Sopot's statue. During the pursuit, Molov's most powerful subordinates launch a counterattack. Molov has taken the nanotech cell – the culmination of Capek's research – and await extraction from Shrike. Shrike betrays his commanding officer, declaring that a grievous error in judgment has been made. Tangier manages to reclaim the nanotech cell from Molov's possession and uses a grenade to cover her escape as she dives headfirst off the observation deck of Sopot's statue.
Molov, desperate to eliminate his enemies, climbs aboard a nearby battle armor and launches a frenzied assault against Alias. Shrike, in his own close air support craft, patrols the area around them. Using the destructible environment to his advantage, Alias manages to evade Molov's fire and launch a counterattack that not only kills Molov, but also destroys the statue. As the statue crumbles, Shrike swoops in to extract his teammate in the nick of time.

Red Faction

Red Faction takes place on Mars around the year 2075. Earth’s minerals are being depleted and humans need more of them to survive. The vast Ultor Corporation runs the mining operation on Mars. The living conditions are deplorable, human rights for the miners are few and a disease called "The Plague" is running rampant throughout the colony with no known antidote available - predominantly within the confines of the mine complex. Parker, a downtrodden miner, came to Mars to make a new start in his life - taken in by the promises and advantages Ultor has to offer in the mines of Mars. After a routine day in the mine with the typical aggression toward miners and cramped living conditions and poor nutrition, he witnesses the spark that starts a rebellion when a security guard abuses a miner at the end of his shift and heartlessly kills him. Parker takes up arms, with the help of Hendrix, a rebellious Ultor security technician who guides Parker through the complex. Hendrix tries to get Parker to join up with a group of miners who are about to steal a supply shuttle and escape the complex, but Parker arrives too late. The shuttle takes off, and is destroyed by missiles moments later.
Parker traverses through the Ultor complex, eliminating any resistance Ultor throws at him, and even (with the help of Orion, a high-ranking Red Faction member) kidnapping a high-ranking Ultor administrator, Gryphon, for Eos, leader of the Red Faction. Parker learns from Gryphon about Dr. Capek, who created "The Plague". Capek has been experimenting with nanotechnology, and the Plague is a side-effect of injections at the miners' annual medical checkup. Hendrix directs Parker to Capek's secret underground laboratory, where he and Eos meet up and take down Capek. Before Capek dies, he tells Eos how to cure the Plague. After sending a distress call to the Earth Defense Force, Parker stows away on a shuttle to an Ultor space station in Martian orbit to deactivate a laser defense system.
After destroying the space station, Parker lands back on Mars via an escape pod, Ultor brings out its reserve of mercenaries to help them in their fight against the miners. Hendrix tells Parker that the mercenaries have orders to destroy the mining complex, covering up any proof of Ultor's wrongdoing, Hendrix is killed soon after this by the mercenaries. After fighting his way through the mercenary base, Parker confronts Masako, the mercenary leader. After he kills Masako, Parker sees that Eos is tied up and sitting on the floor next to the bomb, which has been set to explode. After deactivating it, the Earth Defense Force arrives just in time to save Parker and Eos from a fighter aircraft. Eos tells Parker that an antidote for the Plague has been made and it is being given to any sick miners. She also tells him she is leaving Mars, and that Parker should enjoy his new status as a hero.
